Plush and Touching British Shorthair Cats

In Russia, British cats are the most popular and beloved. Why? For many reasons — these animals are simply very beautiful, as well as cute and touching. A very important trait is their easy-going character, which makes them comfortable to keep in city apartments.

Legends

Many legends surround this interesting cat breed. Some say these cats are descendants of famous Roman cats that were held in special esteem, others tell of cats that were companions on sea vessels and, due to harsh living conditions, had certain features such as powerful paws and special strength that allowed them to easily deal with even large ship rats.

Palace Cat Shows

However, in addition to legends, there is also official data about the breed, whose appearance in Europe dates back to 1870. It was at this time that cat shows became popular, resulting in the definition of the main breed criteria, some of which are still in effect today.

Breeding British Shorthairs

The war made its adjustments to the breed’s existence. However, in the post-war years, the population of pure English cats begins to revive. The breed receives official approval and recognition. British Shorthairs arrived in Russia much later than in other countries — they appeared here only in 1990.

Standards and Rules

Since the breed has a rather long history of development, it has constantly changed and certain standards and rules have been introduced. Certain modern criteria of the breed can be distinguished: dense fur, a massive body, round head, and large expressive eyes.
